While its ease of use remains its greatest selling point, Apple’s shift in focus toward RealityView and the visionOS developer ecosystem has left Reality Composer feeling like a legacy tool that is waiting for a formal retirement or a total reboot. There is also a red flag regarding its future. Apple recently introduced Reality Composer Pro as part of the visionOS developer tools. While the names are similar, Reality Composer Pro is a much more technical tool geared toward the Vision Pro headset and requires a Mac. The original, mobile-friendly Reality Composer feels like it is being left behind in the transition to "Spatial Computing."

Reality Composer is for the "AR curious" professional.

If you are an interior designer who wants to show a client how a specific light fixture might look in their foyer, this is for you. If you are an educator wanting to create a solar system model that students can walk through in the classroom, this is for you.

It is also an excellent tool for UX/UI designers who are prototyping spatial interfaces. It allows you to quickly "feel" the scale of a menu or a button in 3D space before committing to a full development cycle in Xcode.

It is NOT for game developers or anyone looking to build the next "Pokémon GO." It lacks the depth, the optimization tools, and the logic systems required for standalone application development. It is a presentation tool, not a development environment.

Reality Composer is free. It is included as part of the Xcode developer tools on Mac and is a free download on the iOS App Store. Because it costs nothing but your time, the value proposition is technically infinite. However, you are paying with the limitation of the ecosystem; you are locked into Apple hardware and Apple's USDZ format.
